January 10th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Health Department reported 83 new COVID cases in the county Friday, with three additional deaths. This brings the county’s cumulative count to 162 deaths. The current case rate in Allegany County is 44.84 cases per 100,000 population, while the positivity rate is now at 8.68%, both just below the state average.

Coronavirus numbers have been improving in Garrett County, where the health department is reporting an infection rate of 48 and a positivity rate of 16%. Those numbers are slightly higher than those in Allegany County and a little higher than the state averages. Garrett Regional Medical Center is reporting seven COVID hospitalizations.

Mineral County has over 300 active cases of COVID-19, with just over 100 of those being confirmed or suspected during the past week. Hampshire County has over 400 active cases, and just under a hundred during the past week, which is equal to the numbers in Hardy County. Grant has 250 active cases with 75 during the past week.

West Virginia is expected to cross the 100,000 total COVID case mark today, but schools are still expected to reopen for middle and elementary students on January 19. Governor Jim Justice said this week that local systems and parents would still have the option to remain virtual, but said that low rates of transmission make schools safe.
