Local Penney’s Store Not Closing

The Cumberland Times News reports, despite speculation to the contrary, J.C. Penney in LaVale is not on a list released Friday morning of 138 stores being closed by the company. In a news release, the company said in addition to the stores it was also closing one supply chain facility and relocating another, all in an effort to restore the department store chain to profitability. About 5,000 positions nationwide will be impacted by the closures, most of which will occur in June. One Maryland store, Easton, and one West Virginia location, Martinsburg, are on the list of stores scheduled to close. Most affected stores will begin the liquidation process on April 17, the company said. Located at the Country Club Mall, J.C. Penney was an original tenant with Sears and Eyerly’s (now BonTon) when the mall opened in mall opened in 1981.
