Local School Board Releases Statement On Federal Transgender Issue

May 13th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Statement from Dr. David A. Cox, Superintendent of Allegany County Public Schools,
In Response to the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice Joint Guidance
to Help Schools Ensure the Civil Rights of Transgender Students

"Earlier today, I learned the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice released a joint guidance document to help schools ensure the civil rights of transgender students.  I am dismayed by the manner in which the information was made known to us,” stated Dr. Cox. “We had no idea of this prior to its release to the media.  To my knowledge, no information was shared either with the Maryland State Department of Education and this has totally caught us off guard.  In the coming days, we will seek to understand its meaning and the authority by which it has been delivered to formulate our response accordingly.  As of this writing, we have not even had an opportunity to read the actual guidance document.  This has placed us in a difficult position to make comments before we have even had the opportunity to read it or understand what it means."
