Lt Governor Boyd Rutherford wrapped up a two day swing through Western Maryland with a stop in downtown Cumberland Thursday afternoon. He began his visit Wednesday by participating in a meeting with local and state elected officials and other high level members of the administration to discuss- among other things- the future of the Luke Mill. The Verso Corporation closed the mill at the end of June putting some 700 on-site workers out of a job and impacting another 2,000 ancillary contractual workers. Rutherford told WCBC News there have been a number of businesses that have expressed an interest in utilizing the mill- and one man who has discussed a way that could utilize the skills of the displaced mill workers…
On Thursday Rutherford met with the mayor and members of the city council as well as representatives of the Cumberland Economcic Development Corporaton. He received an overview of the plans to redesign the downtown mall- re-opening it to vehicular traffic and converting the former M@T building into a boutique hotel. He said the state is enthused with the potential of the project…
Other stops during his two day tour included a business in Garrett County; a meeting with the Opportunity Zone Task Force at Frostburg State University and a stop at New Germany State Park.
