Man Held Without Bond After Alleged Knife Attack

On Saturday, at approximately 3:30 PM, the Cumberland Police Department responded to a Fairview Avenue residence for a report of a domestic assault involving a knife.

Upon the officers’ arrival, they contacted the suspect, Giovanni Vargas, who was walking in the street near his residence. Officers found that Vargas was in possession of a steak knife. Officers then contacted the victim who reported that Vargas had been yelling at her when he grabbed a steak knife from the kitchen. The victim alleged that Vargas came at her with the knife pointed towards her and lunged at her with the knife.

After further investigation, Vargas was arrested and transported to police headquarters for processing. He was taken before the District Court Commissioner where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center, held without bond.

CHARGES: Assault-1st Degree, Assault-2nd Degree
