The Cumberland Mayor and City Council, late Friday afternoon announced they have selected Laurie Marchini to fill the vacant city council seat. A total of 15 candidates were interviewed in the past week as the council worked through the process to fill the vacancy created by the election of David Caporale to the Allegany County Board of Commissioners.  Mayor Raymond Morriss said it was a difficult decision with a number of solid candidates, but he believes the council made the right call in selecting Ms Marchini. Ms Marchini, who just completed two terms as a member of the Allegany County Board of Education, tells WCBC News that she is excited by the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The nomination of Ms. Marchini for the vacant seat will be made at the January 15th public meeting of the City Council and a formal vote will be taken.  Ms. Marchini will then be sworn in that night by Dawn Lindsey, Clerk of the Allegany County Circuit Court, and will assume her role as Councilwoman to complete the term of Mr. Caporale, which will extend through January, 2021.
