Martirano Will Return to Maryland School System

Howard County's new acting schools superintendent, Michael J. Martirano, is returning to his roots as he steps in to lead one of the nation's highest-performing school systems. More than a decade ago, Martirano was a supervisor of elementary schools in Howard County, where his children attended schools. St. Mary's County lured him away to become superintendent there, and he later became statewide superintendent in West Virginia. In September, Martirano announced plans to step down from the West Virginia job and return to Maryland to be closer to his three adult children. Martirano planned to remain in West Virginia through the school year while looking for work in Maryland, but reached an agreement to leave in March. At a press conference he said he hopes to secure this new position on a permanent basis…
