Maryland Among Coalition Suing Trump Administration To Keep California’s Auto Emission Rules

September 20th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Maryland is one of 23 states that have sued to stop the Trump administration from revoking California’s authority to set emission standards for cars and trucks.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra sued the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration a day after it issued a regulation designed to pre-empt the state’s authority to set its own rules for how much pollution can come from cars and trucks.

Becerra, a Democrat, said two other courts have already upheld California’s emission standards.

“The Oval Office is really not a place for on-the-job training. President Trump should have at least read the instruction manual he inherited when he assumed the presidency, in particular the chapter on respecting the rule of law,” Becerra said in a statement.

Federal law sets standards for how much pollution can come from cars and trucks. But since the 1970s, the federal government has given California permission to set its own rules because it has the most cars on the road of any state and struggles to meet air quality standards.

The Trump administration’s decision does not just affect California. Thirteen other states, plus the District of Columbia, have adopted California’s emission rules for cars and trucks.

“Reversing course in the country’s efforts to reduce air pollution from passenger vehicles is unlawful, irresponsible, and endangers the health of our children and our environment,” Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh said. “Wiping out these common sense standards undermines successful efforts made by states, including Maryland, to combat greenhouse gas emissions.”

Frosh's office notified Gov. Larry Hogan in May that they planned to join California's lawsuit, as is required under a 2017 law that gave Frosh broad power to sue the Trump administration. Nevertheless, Hogan sent a letter to Frosh on the subject last week directing him to take legal action on mileage standards.

Seems like every time you turn around he is part of suing someone outside the state of MD. I just saw him on WJZ, 9/19, crying how short handed he & his staff is to help curb / implement programs in Baltimore to assist our state in reducing murders & crime.
Tend to your own garden before moving out of it would be my suggestion. Not a fan of him.

I am glad Trump is doing something to end the powers that states should not keep anymore. Hopefully their is one fuel standard for the entire nation very soon.
