Maryland Unemployment Sees Spike in Claims

May 8th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

With tens of thousands more workers eligible to file through Maryland Department of Labor's new BEACON One-Stop unemployment insurance website, more than 109,000 Marylanders filed new unemployment claims last week. Maryland Department of Labor officials report that the numbers represent a sharp increase from the previous week due to expanded filing under the federal CARES Act and the new website implemented by the department. Locally more than 750 Allegany County residents filed unemployment claims, and just over 300 from Garrett County. Although early problems with the system have now been addressed- there is a bit of a backlog and some delays. Governor Larry Hogan said he understands that people are frustrated with the process-  adding that the state will continue to work toward making the system as efficient as possible.
