Maryland voters will decide how governor fills vacancies for two statewide offices

November 4th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

arylanders will vote on one, little-debated statewide ballot question this year.

Question 1 is an amendment to the state Constitution that would change the way the comptroller and attorney general are replaced if they leave office before their terms expire. If approved, it would require the governor to name a replacement from the political party that won the office in the previous election.

The Constitution currently allows the governor to fill both offices with the candidate of his choice. Those appointees would serve out the remainder of the departed elected official's term.

While some Republican lawmakers acknowledge the idea has merit, the party takes issue with what they say is the reason Democrats muscled enabling legislation through the General Assembly this year.
