The rates won’t double as some had feared- but Marylanders who buy health insurance on the individual market could once again pay more for coverage. The state's two insurers, Kaiser and CareFirst, are requesting double-digit rate increases for next year. CareFirst has requested a premium increase of 18.5 percent for its HMO plan and 91.4 percent for its PPO plan. Kaiser is requesting a 37.4 percent increase for its HMO. It was just a month ago that Governor Larry Hogan signed legislation that is expected to stave off another year of huge increases in health insurance premiums and prevent the collapse of the state’s individual health insurance markets.
