Mason-Dixon Poll Favors Hogan To Win Re-Election

September 28th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

Another poll out Friday has Gov. Larry Hogan favored to win re-election in November. WBAL reports the Mason-Dixon poll found that the Republican incumbent is supported by 52 percent of voters, with 37 percent backing Democrat Ben Jealous. One percent each back Libertarian Shawn Quinn and Green nominee Ian Schlakman, with nine percent undecided.

The poll was conducted from Monday through Wednesday. The sole debate between Hogan and Jealous aired on television and radio Monday evening, so some of the debate's impact may be reflected in the poll.

Hogan leads in most of the state, while Jealous leads in Baltimore City and Prince George's and Montgomery Counties but by margins pollsters say are smaller than most Democrats have netted in recent state elections.

Hogan meanwhile has the support of 32 percent of Democrats and 58 percent of independents. Republicans are united behind Hogan, with 92 percent support.

If Hogan wins, he would be the first Republican governor to win re-election since Theodore McKeldin in 1954. He would be the first Republican to win re-election to any statewide office since Charles "Mac" Mathias won a third term in the U.S. Senate in 1980.

I would suggest that the governor not count his chickens just yet. He has shown by his disdain for the President and other actions that he is no more a real Republican than was his father. Those of us that are may not vote for him or possibly even against him. Much more of this hubris will tilt me towards the latter option.
