Mayor and City Council Consider Removing Economic Development Department

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council on Wednesday participated in an economic development strategic planning meeting held by the City’s consultant, RKG & Associates- and now a steering committee will study that report and present recommendations by the end of the month.  Kyle Talente, vice president and principal with RKG, provided a brief overview- as many of the concepts and proposals having been discussed in previous meetings. The biggest proposed change would be to remove economic development as a city department- and to create a 501c (3) organization combining the public and private sectors. Talente said that this will motivate the private sector to be more willing to invest in economic development opportunities:
