Mayoral Candidates Discuss Paid Fire Department

June 7th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

Cumberland is one of the few municipalities in Maryland with a full time paid fire department. With population declining and the fiscal picture not ideal- there has been talk over the years about the possibility of going to a volunteer department. It was one of the questions posed to the candidates for mayor during a recent WCBC forum. Incumbent Brian Grim said he would favor a more coordinated effort with the county as opposed to changing the city’s department from professional to volunteer…

Candidate David Smith said going to a volunteer department would lead to a longer response time, and that is something citizens do not want to see…

Candidate Raymond Dye said he would like to see volunteers added to the existing department…

Candidate Raymond Morriss said a mix of professionals and volunteers could save money, while not impacting response times…

Candidate Robin Hood Constitution said in the right circumstances he would like to see more professional fire fighters hired, but realizes the current fiscal climate won’t allow it….

Candidate George Merling suggested that the current department lacks proper management…

Candidate Lawrence Becker was unable to attend due to a family emergency.
