Advocates and lawmakers began their push last week to gradually raise Maryland’s minimum wage to $15 by 2023, a starting point for negotiations on what’s expected to be one of the hottest topics of this year’s General Assembly session. Delegate 1C representative Mike McKay tells WCBC News that unfortunately he thinks it’s a done deal. The bill that has been introduced would raise the minimum wage to $11 per hour later this year, then add $1 each year until reaching $15 in 2023. After that, the minimum wage would be indexed to the rate of inflation, so it would automatically increase. McKay said he believes such an increase could potentially prove devastating for small businesses, particularly for border counties such as Allegany and Garrett…

Yes, wouldn’t it be HORRIBLE if people could make enough to pay their rent and buy their own food without help from the government!! smh.

Hi, actual min. Wage worker here. Whereas the money would be nice and helpful for me, I think it could be a problem for smaller, or newer, businesses. What if they lack the funds to pay $15 an hour? They can’t stick around paying money they may not have. If I want to make more money, I’ll go back to college and look for another line of work.

I agree more money needs to in employee’s pockets. With that said being in retail operations for years, the pay scales need lowered for the 6 figure upper management guys that should money be used to get the wage to $15! If not that money will only come from staff cuts. Your seeing this already in local stores putting in self checkouts in. I for one am not going to a retailer and self scanning over 20 items, period! I simply won’t shop at these retailers because of scanning errors when checking out. So someone will do without, upper management or the Government thru better spending!!! Most Min. wage employee’s have been doing without for years. The gap between rich and poor have never been higher. These corporations get higher P&L’S and never pass it long to their employees and that’s a fact! The Pope’s Christmas Day speech said the rich are getting richer off the poor! God’s blessing to all…who read!
