MD AG Recognizes Out Of State Gay Marriage

January 11th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

Maryland's attorney general says he believes recent same-sex marriages legally performed in Utah would be recognized in Maryland. Doug Gansler made the statement Friday in response to a letter from the Human Rights Campaign to him and 17 other attorneys general. A federal judge overturned Utah's ban on same-sex marriage last month, and hundreds of couples got married. The U.S. Supreme Court intervened this week and put a halt to the weddings until the courts sort out the matter. Utah then declared it would not recognize the weddings.

Gansler says Maryland will continue to recognize valid out-of-state same-sex marriages. In 2010, Gansler issued an opinion that legal gay marriages in other states are valid in Maryland.

Same-sex marriages became legal in Maryland last year
