Meeting Scheduled for Planned Frederick Street Bike Lane

August 21st, 2014 by WCBC Radio

City of Cumberland officials have scheduled a meeting for this evening to hear viewpoints from citizens in regard to a city plan that would add bike lanes for both Frederick and Bedford streets. With plans for the 5- to 6-foot wide bike lane to be on the right side of Frederick Street, the project would require several changes for area residents. Parking on Frederick would be moved from the right side to the left and the two-lane portion of extended Frederick would be reduced to one lane.  The meeting will be held at the Cornerstone Baptist Church on Frederick Street and gets underway at 5. Delegate Kevin Kelly has already come out strongly opposed to the idea pointing to safety concerns. The issue has been discussed during several recent city council meetings. Councilmember Nicole Wagner, a resident of Frederick Street/Bedford street area, has talked about some of the existing traffic concerns. She said a bike lane may actually improve safety as it would force drivers to be more alert and focused when traveling in that part of the city.
