Merger Could Impact Local Supermakets

The Herald Mail reports the merger between the parent companies of the Giant/Martin's and Food Lion supermarkets is currently under review by regulatory and competition authorities, including by the Federal Trade Commission in the U.S., according to officials. Ahold USA, parent company of Giant/Martin's, and Delhaize Group, Food Lion's parent company, are expected to complete their merger by the middle of this year. Although there is no official word from the companies, FTC regulations could cause the companies to sell as many as 83 stores, including those in Hagerstown and Martinsburg, W.Va., according to published reports.

There are three Martin’s stores in Hagerstown, three in Franklin County, Pa., and several in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia and Frederick, Md.

There are more than a dozen Food Lion stores in Washington County, Md., Franklin County, Pa., and West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle.
