Mikulski Calls for Commission Study on National Guard Cuts

April 25th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski is calling for a national Commission on Army Force structure to study proposed Pentagon budget cuts to the National Guard. She's calling for a 'second opinion,' which she says could cripple the reservist military force both in Maryland and throughout the nation. The commission would be made up of current and former military members and would return proposals in 90 days.  The Army is considering the cuts as part of troop drawdown plans for both Afghanistan and Iraq. Right now, there are about 355,000 National Guard troops nationwide. The cuts call for a reduction of about 20,000. There are about 5,000 here in Maryland and could mean a loss of about 500 men and women, if Congress doesn't find a solution.
