In Mineral County municipal election news, it will be a full slate for Ridgley’s upcoming election.
Ridgeley mayor Mark Jones is unopposed for his re-election bid. Commissioners Nick Imes, Duke Lantz, Don McFarland and Tanya Ryan have all filed for re-election. Joining them on the ballot for the five council seats are Butch Hawse, Jessica Imes and James Twigg. The town election will be held June 11 with early voting to be held prior to election. In Elk Garden, mayor Marian Droppleman is also unopposed in her re-election bid for the June 11 election. As candidate filing concluded, Brandi Paugh is unopposed in her re-election bid for the recorder’s seat. Councilmen Kevin Broadwater, Michael Droppleman and Jody Paugh have filed for re-election and joining them on the ballot for the five council seats are Dave Tichnell, Charles Welch Jr. and Gary Wildman. Early voting in Elk Garden will be held June 1 and June 8 for the June 11 election.
While those town’s have single candidates contests for mayor, in Piedmont’s municipal election, there are no candidates for the top spot. The election is set for Monday, May 13, and the names of four incumbent council members will be on the ballot to fill five open slots. Ben Smith, just finishing his second term as mayor, has chosen not to seek re-election, which will leave that office vacant following the election. Paula Boggs, serving Piedmont as parks and recreation commissioner, is also Piedmont’s 2019 municipal election officer, and she said after the election, “The council members can appoint a person to fill the mayor’s open spot.” The polling place for the citizens to vote is in the Piedmont City building
