On Saturday afternoon deputies from the Allegany County Sheriff's Office responded to a motor vehicle crash in the 300 block of National Highway. Upon their arrival they found a utility pole to be broken in half and on fire. The vehicle that caused the damage had been traveling west on National Highway when the operator and sole occupant of the vehicle fell asleep causing the vehicle to leave the roadway, strike the utility pole and break it in half. The vehicle continued to travel west and struck a parked vehicle before traveling over an embankment and coming to rest. The operator of the vehicle was later identified as Phyliss Ann Ruedinger (age 56) from Potomac Falls Virginia.She was transported by LaVale Rescue Squad to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. The operator was not cited for the incident. Allegany Sheriff's Office, LaVale Fire Department, LaVale Rescue Squad, and Potomac Edison Power responded to the scene. National Highway was closed to all traffic for approximately one hour before being re-opened.
