New Health Officer to be appointed

The Allegany County Commissioners took formal action on February 25th to nominate Jenelle Mayer, MPH to fill the vacant County Health Department position. Mayer's name will now be forwarded to Van T. Mitchell, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), for final consideration.

Jacob C. Shade, President of the Board of County Commissioners, stated: "We are very pleased to nominate an outstanding candidate for the position here in Allegany County. We are delighted to have Jenelle Mayer, an exceptional individual positioned to take this key leadership role in our community."

County Administrator David A. Eberly remarked: "The County's role in nominating a candidate to the Secretary of DHMH proved to be an arduous and lengthy assignment. Given the quality of our candidate, it was well worth the wait."

The Allegany County Health Department offers a broad array of health services in the community ranging from extensive environmental health programs to behavioral health services including mental health and addictions. The health
department provides dental health and school health services as well as having responsibilities for public health preparedness. The department has 310 employees and operates with a $22 million budget.
