New Program Trying A “Holistic” Approach To Combat Opioid Epidemic In Allegany Co.

With many traditional methods proving ineffective- the Executive Director of the Western Maryland Area Health Education Center tells WBAL that a new program trying a “holistic” approach will be used to help combat the opioid/heroin epidemic in Allegany County. Susan Stewart says the plan is to use a recently awarded 100-thousand dollar federal grant to help educate young and adult women about the dangers of heroin abuse- and a big part of that education program will include yoga. Stewart says trauma sensitive trained specialists will hold yoga classes for women who live in public housing in Frostburg, Cumberland and Westernport. They will do an hour of yoga with the women for two weeks at a time. She says there is evidence based research to show yoga strengthens the mind and body and helps with connection and socialization…
