March 26th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

The West Virginia Board of Education (WVBE) voted unanimously today to appoint Dr. Steven Paine as West Virginia’s 31st Superintendent of Schools. Paine was chosen following interviews of three finalists, which included two other veteran West Virginia educators, Dr. Kathy D’Antoni and Mr. Blaine Hess.

Paine will begin serving on Monday, March 27, 2017 and will make a salary of $230,000 per year.

“Dr. Paine’s past experiences and knowledge of West Virginia’s educational landscape make him the ideal candidate to serve as Superintendent of Schools,” WVBE President Tom Campbell said. “He is a proven leader who is committed to raising the bar for everyone involved in education, and the State Board is confident in his ability to lead during this challenging time.”

Paine is currently the interim superintendent of Wayne County Schools. He previously served as West Virginia’s 25th Superintendent of Schools from 2005-2011. Paine joined the West Virginia Department of Education in 2003 as the deputy state superintendent of schools after serving as superintendent of Morgan County Schools. He has also served as principal, assistant principal, teacher and curriculum director in the Upshur and Harrison county school systems. Paine is the recipient of the prestigious Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award. Paine holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership Studies, and an M.A. in Educational Administration. He also holds a B.A. in Education.

“I am humbled to be appointed as the Superintendent of Schools and once again serve the students throughout West Virginia,” Paine said. “I am committed to ensuring that our education system provides all children the opportunity for a world-class education and I look forward to working closely with the State Board, Governor Justice, our lawmakers and educators to prepare the students of the Mountain State to be successful in life.”

Paine will succeed Dr. Michael Martirano, who has served as the West Virginia’s Superintendent of Schools since 2014.
