School Board Awaits Funding Numbers

April 2nd, 2015 by WCBC Radio

These are trying times for the Allegany County Board of Education- facing a great deal of uncertainty as to what funding levels will be made available from both the state and county. The state is in the midst of wrapping up its FY 2015-2016 budget, facing an April 13th deadline- however at this point there is a wide difference in the education funding package proposed by the governor, as compared to the one approved by the house and senate. Lawmakers altered the governor’s proposal, by including an additional $150 million for the public school system. Locally there is more time as the County Commissioners will not adopt a final budget until May 28th.    The proposed 2016 operating budget was adopted by the School Board in calls for $3 million above last year’s county allocation. School officials have asked the county to fund $28.6 million in operating funds and additional funding for teacher pensions. School Board President Nick Hadley tells WCBC News that not knowing exactly how much funding will be available to operate places the board in a difficult position….
