The Cumberland Times News reports no new information was available Friday concerning the Maryland State Police investigation into the recent death of a 24-year-old Frostburg man whose body was found on a private road near Savage River State Forest. Alexander A. Stevens was found dead the morning of Jan. 4 near Pine Swamp Road in Garrett County. His body displayed unspecified trauma when it was discovered a short time after his female companion exited the wooded area and sought refuge at a residence on Pine Swamp Road, police said. Limited information has been provided by state police investigators who last week said Stevens' death was believed to be an "isolated situation” and that there is no danger to the public. The woman, who has not been identified by investigators, remained hospitalized Friday at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, according to Elena Russo, state police spokesman at Pikesville. The woman was initially treated for hypothermia when an ambulance squad responded to the Pine Swamp Road residence where she had called for help. In response to questions from the Times-News, Russo said the relationship between Stevens and the woman was “boyfriend, girlfriend.” The woman, believed to be in her 20s, has reportedly cooperated with investigators throughout the investigation. In a 911 call, she reportedly told emergency workers that Stevens had fallen off a cliff. Russo said autopsy results have not yet become available concerning the manner and cause of Stevens' death. “We are still waiting for toxicology,” she said. A search reportedly began for the couple after a 911 call to the Mineral County emergency center at about 2:15 a.m. Jan. 4 indicated they were missing. The initial response to the call was made by Natural Resources Police. It was 8:30 a.m. that day when an ambulance was sent to the area of 2300 Pine Swamp Road to assist the injured woman. Stevens' body was discovered a short time later by a state police medevac helicopter. The investigation is being handled by the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division and the State Police Homicide Unit. Assistance was also being provided by the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigations Unit (C3I) and Natural Resources Police.
