North-South Appalachian Highway To Remain Greater Cumberland Committees Top Priority

January 4th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

The Greater Cumberland Committee, since early 2009, has been the cornerstone of the North-South Appalachian Highway project – and as 2013 gets underway, it remains the organizations top priority. The Committee is part of the North-South Appalachian Highway Coalition- a three-state group of individual businesses, county and municipal governments, and non-profit organizations, which is focused on the development of US Route 219 from Somerset, Pa., to the Maryland State line and US Route 220 from the Cumberland area to Appalachian Corridor H in West Virginia. The Greater Cumberland Committee (TGCC) and the North/South Appalachian Highway Coalition will continue to convene and engage officials to move this project forward at PACE in Annapolis later this month and at Mineral County Days in Charleston in February. Bob Smith is co-chair of the PACE Committee and a member of GCC…

This Greater Cumberland Committee needs to stop pushing for the new highway to totally bypass Cumberland. They have no clue how damaging that would be to the city. Aren’t they the Greater CUMBERLAND Committee? If they even care one ounce about Cumberland they need to focus on making sure the new highway comes INTO Cumberland, not around it and into LaVale. That Committee needs to pull their heads out of the sand on this idea or disband – they’re detrimental to the community, not a help!!!

The Greater Cumberland Committee (TGCC) is a regional business based organization supporting three states and five counties. In 2009, TGCC’s membership chose to endorse the construction of the North/South Highway with the belief that this would be an economic driver and job creator for the region. Our membership has worked with Governor O’Malley to restore funds to update a feasibility study in 2010 that substantiated the value of this project and the creation of 10,000 permanent and 20,000 construction related jobs. At no time, has TGCC advocated one route over another and has left those decisions to the Departments of Transportation in MD, PA and WV, as well as state and federal highway administrations.

Brenda – all due respect – either you don’t know the work of TGCC (ironic given your name being the same as the Executive Director) or you are covering for them. TGCC has PUBLICLY encouraged development of 219 over 220, north of Cumberland. Repeatedly, TGCC has encouraged a more western route with constant focus on 219 development. Don’t just call us all fools – TGCC has a CLEAR agenda to make this route go west of Cumberland for the very long future, cutting Cumberland out of the route. I’m going to assume you’re not the same Brenda or I’d have to say shame on you, given your previous employer and your presumed dedication to this community.
