NTSB Issues Report on Double CSX Fatalities in June

July 14th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

The National Transportation Safety Board has issued a preliminary report on the railroad accident that killed two employees of CSX Cumberland in DC on June 27th.

25 year old Jake Lafave and 20 year old Stephen Deal were killed when they were inspecting a railcar which had given a dispatcher an indication it had overheated bearings or wheels, and there may be a problem with an axle.

The pair was observed by an Amtrak train on a nearby track traveling 73 miles per hour.  The engineer told the NTSB he saw the two about 350 feet ahead on the tracks when he hit his horn.

They were walking back to the CSX Locomotive when the fatal mishap occurred in an area where the track narrows between Track 2 and Track 3.
