O’Malley Making Same-Sex Marriage Bill A Priority On His Legislative Agenda

After hosting a breakfast with supporters at the governor’s residence on Tuesday, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley said that a measure to legalize same-sex marriage in Maryland focuses more carefully on protecting religious freedom than a bill that failed last year. O’Malley, a Democrat who is making same-sex marriage a priority of his legislative agenda this year, said bill drafters were especially sensitive to protecting religious freedom in hopes of persuading lawmakers — as well as the state’s voters — to support the legislation. That’s because it’s widely believed opponents would be able to petition a successful bill to the ballot for voters to decide in November.
