At approximately 11:23 AM Saturday, Cumberland Police were dispatched to a Grand Avenue address for a report of suspicious activity.
Upon the arrival of officers they meant with the caller who reported seeing a male and female around a residence acting suspicious. The caller also reported seeing a passenger vehicle circling the area. Officers checked the residence and the residence next door finding nothing out of the place.
A short time later officers received a call that the same male subject exited a different residence with property and enter the same vehicle observed earlier. Officers checked the residence and found evidence that a burglary occurred. Officers made contact with the property owner who reported that numerous items had been removed from the home. The original caller had obtained a tag number from the earlier reported suspicious vehicle. Officers made contact with the owner of the vehicle and found that the owner’s daughter was using it. Officers learned that the female was living in the south end area near Oak Street with her boyfriend Mark Edward Whorton Jr.
The officers returned to the area and located Whorton exiting a residence carrying property. Whorton looked at the officers and fled on foot. A short foot chase ensued and Whorton was stopped and detained. Officers also located the female who was later identified as Tara Marie Whiteman walking in the area. Officers interviewed the two and discovered that they did remove property from the residence and had it stored in a nearby residence. They allowed officers to retrieve the stolen property so that it could be returned to the owners.
Whorton and Whiteman were taken into custody and transported to Police Headquarters for processing. Both subjects were later taken before the District Court Commissioner where Whorton was held on a $10,000.00 bond and Whiteman was held on a $5,000.00 bond.
