Pedestrians Struck By Train

September 8th, 2011 by WCBC Radio

On Thursday morning, 09/08/2011, at approximately 4:00 AM, the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office responded to Ellerslie for a reported train/pedestrian accident. When Deputies arrived at the Schellsburg Road train crossing, they found the bodies of two victims, a male and female, who were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. Preliminary interviews of the CSX train crew revealed that the train was approaching the crossing when the crew noticed two subjects on the track. The crossing lights and crossing gates had been activated by the approaching train and were working properly. Upon observing the subjects on the track, the crew sounded the train horn to warn them, but the victims apparently did not respond and both were struck.

A Forensic Investigator with The Maryland State Medical Examiner’s Office also responded to the scene. The bodies have been forwarded to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The deceased have been identified as 23 year old Jonathan Michael Soult and 18 year old Amanda Nicole Smith, both of Ellerslie.

A joint investigation by the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, CSX, and C3I into the circumstances surrounding the incident is continuing.
