Period Lighting Project In Need Of Funds

The period lighting project proposed that would bring lights poles to Washington Street and Prospect Square received a boost from the governor’s capital budget, receiving just under $100,000. Where the rest of the estimated $600,000 project comes from remains an unanswered question- however the city of Cumberland is exploring a few options that could help.  Ben Wolters, president of the Washington Street Association, says that the project will provide lighting fixtures appropriate for the 1900 time period, which matches many of the historic houses and buildings in the subject area.  Funding proposals for the project were discussed briefly by the City Council on Tuesday. One possibility would be to establish a special taxing district, but given that support from Washington Street residents has been less than overwhelming, Mayor Brian Grim has concerns moving in that direction…
