With plans to re-configure the downtown Cumberland Mall – the hope is construction can get underway sometime next spring or summer. That construction, among other things, will see the mall literally torn up as the project includes replacing aging underground utility lines and adding broadband fiber optics. They just finished paying off the debt from the ’70s that they incurred to CLOSE the road to traffic. That was about $1 million, this will be much more. Of course, bonds require the repayment over the years of 3 or 4 times the amount borrowed. We will be told not to worry because all those millions needed to repay will easily come from the growing tax revenue of all the new businesses springing up thanks to DDC’s clever development, just as we were told in the ’70s. Even the DDC admits that the construction may kill the few existing businesses but you got to break a few eggs to make an omelette.

I’d really like to see the downtown mall remain the same. I can’t even imagine cars down there now. Who wants to enjoy outside dining with exhaust fumes as an appetizer? How about all the elderly that have enjoyed walking the downtown mall, having to now contend with traffic? I shudder to think of the imminent catastrophe that awaits us….
