Police Chase Ends With Vehicle Striking Residence

On September 19, 2019 at approximately 1120 hours the Allegany County Sheriff's Office was notified that Pennsylvania State Police units were pursuing a vehicle southbound on Route 220 towards Allegany County, Maryland. A short time later a 2015 Acura sedan entered Allegany County where it continued to travel south on Rt. 220 with several law enforcement units following. The vehicle continued on Rt. 220 and eventually ended up traveling on Mason Road while failing to stop and attempting to elude police. The vehicle continued on Mason Road for a short time before the operator, later identified as Steven Jeffrey Cover, age 18, of Schellsburg, PA, lost control and the vehicle traveled into an unoccupied residence. The suspect was taken into custody after a brief struggle. The vehicle caught fire and the fire was able to spread to the interior of the residence prior to the arrival of fire units.  

Mr. Cover was taken into custody and later transported to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. Mr. Cover was released from the hospital and was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center to be processed. Mr. Cover was charged with numerous traffic charges in Maryland to include Negligent Driving, Reckless Driving, Failure to Drive Right of Center, Fleeing / Eluding Police. He was also charged with resisting arrest. The Pennsylvania State Police completed charging documents and a warrant was obtained from Pennsylvania to include several felony charges.

The following agencies assisted in the incident. Bedford Road Fire Department, Baltimore Pike Fire Department, Cumberland Fire Department, Ridgeley Fire Department, Bowman's Addition Fire Department, Bowling Green Fire Department, Lavale Rescue, Corriganville Fire Department, Wiley Ford Fire Department, District 16 Fire Department, Cresaptown Fire Department, Flintstone Fire Department, Mt. Savage Fire Department, Cumberland Police, and the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.

    WOW! He is only 18 years old! Thank God nobody was killed in this incident over a JOY RIDE! Let’s keep in mind that 15 fire and rescue departments responded to this incident, along with Police cruisers from 2 states who jeopardized their safety and well being to catch this clown! I just wonder if this criminal will have to pay restitution for that, or the house he caught on fire! Maybe, that’s why he’s smiling! Chances are, that money will never all be recovered, and he knows it! Zero accountability. Probably, zero insurance.
