On January 25, 2014 officers from the Cumberland City Police Department responded to 538 Maryland Avenue regarding a possible assault.  Upon the officers arrival they made contact with, Shirley Delaine Crites.  While speaking with Crites, she advised the officers that her friend came over to her residence and started and argument with her.  Crites said she told her friend to leave and attempted to escort her out of the residence.  Crites admitted to the officers that she slapped her friend in the face after she was touched first.  After speaking with Crites, officers made contact with the second subject involved in the altercation.  While speaking with the subject, she informed the officers when she arrived at the residence Crites started screaming and yelling at her.  After being slapped in the face, Crites went into her bedroom, obtained a handgun and walked back into the living room.  After entering the living room, Crites pointed the gun at her friends head stating "if you don't leave I am going to shoot you".  Crites later admitted to the officers that she obtained her gun from the room and walked back into the living room.  Crites stated that she did not threaten her friend with the gun.  Officers were able to locate the gun which was located in Crites bedroom.  The gun was not loaded when the officers located it.  Before officers cleared the residence, they located a marijuana pipe in the living room that was in plain view.  Crites was placed under arrest and transported to the Cumberland City Police Department for processing.  Crites was taken to the District Court Commissioner office for her initial appearance and released on her own personal recognizance.

Arrested: Shirley Delaine Crites                                         Age: 52 of Cumberland, Maryland

Charges: 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

 

Theft Arrest

On January 25, 2014 officers from the Cumberland City Police Department responded to Martin's Market located at 739 Park Street for a shoplifting complaint.  Upon the officers arrival they made contact with the store manager.  Officers were advised that an employee observed a female putting food items inside her jacket.  The female was later observed leaving the store without paying for the merchandise.  The female was contacted outside the store and the stolen merchandise was retrieved.  The female was identified as, Amanda Lynn Phillips.  Phillips admitted to the officers that she had taken the items and did not intend on paying for the items.  Phillips stated that she had no money and was trying to get food for her daughter.  Phillips was arrested at the scene and transported to the Cumberland City Police Department for processing.  Phillips was issued a criminal citation and released pending her trial date in District Court.

Charge: Theft less than $100.
