Police make drug arrest

On Friday,  at approximately 10:00 PM, an officer from the Cumberland Police Department was conducting a patrol check of a park in the north end of the city. The officer while checking the park observed a suspicious vehicle with three occupants. The officer noticed that the occupants were making quick movements inside the vehicle.  Upon making contact with the subjects, the occupant in the driver’s seat, Clinton Barnes, age 34, Cumberland, became aggressive and began attempting to obstruct  the officer. Barnes continued to obstruct the officer’s investigation and was placed under arrest.  A search of Barnes person and his vehicle revealed a substantial amount of CDS and paraphernalia.  Barns was taken to the Cumberland Police Department and charged with Obstructing and hindering, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, two counts CDS possession not marijuana, and two counts of CDS paraphernalia.  Barnes was processed and taken to District Court where he was awaiting a Bond Hearing at the time of the press release.

On Friday a Cumberland City Police Officer responded to a motor vehicle accident at a parking lot located off of Pershing Street.  When the officer arrived, contact was made with the at fault driver Maranda Pearson.  Pearson appeared to be under the influence to the officer so she was asked to perform some standard field sobriety test.  After the tests were completed, the officer noticed an unidentified pill lying inside of Pearson’s vehicle.  A search of her vehicle was conducted and the pill was seized.  Pearson admitted to ingesting muscle relaxers and Xanax prior to the accident.  She was placed under arrested and transported to the Cumberland City Police Station.  The seized pill was later identified as being a narcotic.  Pearson was charged with unsafe backing of a motor vehicle, driving while impaired by a controlled dangerous substance, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.  She was later taken before the District Court Commissioner and released on an unsecured $3,000 bond pending court.
