Police make theft, assault arrests

On 08/28/2015 Cumberland City Police officers served an arrest warrant on a Cumberland man for theft related charges.  The charges are the result of a Cumberland Police investigation which was initiated on 08/25/2015.  During that investigation officers were dispatched to a Bedford Street address for a report of an attempted robbery. 


Officers arrived on the scene and spoke with the victim in this case.  The victim told police that they knew the suspect and that the suspect had previously been in the house.  When the victim advised the suspect that he had to leave the house, the suspect allegedly grabbed a wallet and currency belonging to the victim and fled.

The victim and family members were able to pursue the suspect and eventually got the wallet and currency back.  The victim identified the suspect in this case as Vernon Anderson III, 25, of Cumberland. 


Officers filed for charges against Anderson and as a result he was arrested and charged with the following:


Attempted Theft – Less than $1000.00 – 1 count

Disturbing the Peace – 1 count


Anderson was processed at Cumberland City Police Headquarters and then taken for a bond hearing at District Court.  Anderson was released on his own recognizance by the Court Commissioner.




    On 08/28/2015, Cumberland Police officers were dispatched to a Fayette Street residence in reference to a reported assault.  Upon arrival to the scene officers met with the victim in this case who reported the following: 


The victim reported that they had been in an argument with a roommate over a pet in the residence.  The argument escalated to the point that the suspect allegedly assaulted a juvenile who resides in the residence.  When the victim attempted to intervene, they were also allegedly assaulted by the suspect. 


The victim in this case identified the suspect as Travis Edward Cecil, 27, of Cumberland.  As a result of this investigation Cecil was placed under arrest and charged with the following:


Assault 2nd Degree – 2 counts


Cecil was transported to Cumberland Police Headquarters for processing.  During processing officers discovered that Cecil is currently wanted in West Virginia on an open arrest warrant.  Cecil was processed and transported to the Allegany County District Court for a bond hearing.  Cecil was held without bond.
