Prevent Type 2 Diabetes Info Session at GRMC on April 16

April 1st, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Garrett Regional Medical Center is hosting a “Prevent Type 2 Diabetes Info Session” on April 16 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the hospital’s boardroom.  Classes for the Type 2 program will begin in late April and are being offered after work hours in an effort to reach more individuals who may wish to enroll in the program.

According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 37 percent of Marylanders have prediabetes, and many are unaware they have the condition.  The info session, sponsored by GRMC’s Outpatient Diabetes Education Program, provides an overview of the Prevent Type 2 Diabetes class aimed for participants who have developed or are at a high-risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.   Classes will begin on April 30 with preregistration required.

“We want to give our community members the opportunity to learn how the diabetes prevention program can help develop lasting habits to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes,” said Mitzi Wiltison, RN, CDE of the GRMC’s Outpatient Diabetes Program.  “Upon completion of the class, our participants often share how positively life-changing the program was for them and how they feel newly empowered to improve their overall health.”

The curriculum for GRMC’s Type 2 Diabetes Prevention program received Full Recognition by the National Diabetes Prevention Program of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.   GRMC is the only healthcare organization in western Maryland to achieve Full Recognition status by the Centers for Disease Control.   The curriculum features nutrition education, stress management techniques and motivation-building activities.
