Merrill Barnes, a longtime local business owner and a veteran, passed away Thursday following a brief illness. Born in Cumberland in 1920, Barnes opened 'Barnes Custom Jewelers" which won several national awards for design. Merrill moved from the area to Rockport Massachusetts in 1981.
