Proposal would allow landowners to shoot bears

The Cumberland Times News reports legislation has been introduced in the Maryland General Assembly that would allow some property owners in Garrett and Allegany counties to shoot bears without obtaining a permit. On Monday, Sen. George Edwards introduced Senate Bill 959. He said via phone on Tuesday that a companion house bill is expected to be introduced soon. Edwards said the bill would allow someone who owns a parcel of land of at least 100 acres in either county to hunt a bear on that land without obtaining a permit allocated by the Maryland Wildlife & Heritage Service. The landowner would not be required to have agricultural crops to qualify for the hunt. The request, according to Edwards, was made because of crop damage — especially to corn — caused by bear
