Rain Doesn’t Dampen Spirits at 2018 Rocky Gap Triathalon

June 16th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland YMCA held the 31st Annual Rocky Gap Triathlon & 4th Annual Duathlon at Rocky Gap State Park on Sunday, June 3, 2018. “We appreciate all our athletes, volunteers and especially our race directors, Mike Getty and Dr. Ian MacFawn, for enduring tough weather conditions. The rain certainly did not dampen the spirits of those in attendance. We are so glad our 66 triathletes and 15 duathletes were able to participate and finish the race safely!” shared Julie O’Neal, CFO of the Y.

Winners of the triathlon were: Zach Bittinger, Frostburg, MD, with a time of 53:30 and Krisin McCasky, McHenry, MD, with a time of 1:08:41. Duathlon winners were: Charles Falter, Cumberland, MD, with a time of 1:11:05 and Emily Corio, Morgantown, WV, with a time of 1:36:31.

“A race like this involves countless hours of preparation from our volunteers.  Mike Getty and his volunteer group were amazing and we really appreciate all they contributed to this annual event. They spent so much time in the rain and dealing with soggy obstacles. We truly appreciate all they do to help create a safe race course and provide an opportunity for our community to celebrate health and wellness.” O’Neal said.

The Y is currently planning a new signature community event, Dragons on the Lake Festival which will be held at Rocky Gap State Park on Saturday, September 22, 2018. This festival will feature dragon boat racing — a unique team building experience for teams of 20 paddlers and one drummer — as well as food vendors and live music. Entry sign up will open soon and one can check for updates on www.cumberlandymca.org.

When you support the Y, you help us continue to: mentor at-risk youth, house and job counsel people in need, teach children to swim, help a senior stay active, enhance a child’s school readiness with literacy and developmental activities, give teen parents the ability to finish high school and learn parenting skills, as well as provide a facility for indoor soccer, basketball, pickleball, volleyball, indoor track, group fitness classes, swimming and much, much more.
