River and Rails Festival Opens Today

September 7th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

The first River & Rails Festival opens today and runs through Sunday at Canal Place and is free to the public. The event is a collaboration between Canal Place and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary.  Dee Dee Ritchie, Canal Place executive director, said that the goal was to kick off the proposed River Park at Canal Place project with a fundraiser that is also educational.  The project, which is still in the early planning stages, is expected to include a whitewater kayak and canoeing course, spectator viewing area, river trail and scenic overlook on Knobley Mountain at Ridgeley, West Virginia. When complete, Ritchie says it has the potential to provide a tremendous new revenue stream for the region, attracting tourists and new businesses…
