Road Work on Queen City Drive next week could delay traffic

August 5th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Columbia Gas of Maryland, has announced that on Tuesday, August 10 beginning at 6:00 am, a detour route will be in place to permit Queen City Drive to be closed from Baltimore Street to the Rose’s Parking Lot Entrance at the McDonald’s Restaurant.

The closure is necessary to allow Columbia Gas to excavate pits in order to bore a new gas main underneath the CSX Tracks.

The full road closure is expected to be in effect until Wednesday, August 11 at 6pm, at which time Queen City Drive would be reopened to two lanes of traffic going in both directions between 6pm and 6am each day. The road will be closed while Columbia Gas is working at the site.

Site conditions will determine if two-way traffic is possible and will be reassessed on Wednesday afternoon. Additional information will be released once the site has been reviewed by Columbia Gas and the Cumberland City Engineer.

The road will continue to be closed between the hours of 6am and 6pm each weekday until Friday, August 27. The road is expected to be opened for two-way traffic during the weekends.

Westbound vehicles on Queen City Drive will be detoured down Harrison Street to Mechanic Street and Frederick Street. Eastbound vehicles on Queen City Drive will be detoured down Bedford Street Extended (adjacent to the McMullen Bridge) to Bedford Street, Mechanic Street and Harrison Street. Local traffic will be permitted to access the Rose’s Shopping Plaza going eastbound. Also, local traffic will be permitted to move westbound towards the Queen City Drive and Baltimore Street intersection in order to cross the CSX Tracks towards Baltimore Avenue and Park Street.

Delays should be expected and flaggers will be present at the construction site to facilitate the movement of traffic. Residents are advised to avoid the area as much as possible during this time to allow for the work to be completed safely and successfully.
