Nearly four and a half years after Marylander’s voted overwhelmingly to approve slot machines at five locations including Rocky Gap- the local site is opening for business tomorrow. The Rocky Gap Lodge and Resort, complete with a Jack Nicklaus designed championship golf course was viewed 15 years ago as a major economic engine for western Maryland- however those projections have not come to fruition- and the facility has actually lost money for most of that time. The new hope is that a 550 slot machine casino complete with ten table games may be just the winning ticket to bring the facility to life. Lakes Entertainment Inc. of Minnetonka, Minn., aims to open the gambling parlor Wednesday through its Evitts Resort LLC subsidiary. The casino, Maryland's fourth, will add 250 jobs at the resort, where employment historically has ranged from about 100 in the winter to 400 in the summer. A spokesman for Lakes told WCBC News that he believes the Rocky Gap casino, with enough distance from its nearest competitiors- is ideally located to succeed.
