Since the day it was announced, there has been talk that the move of Verso to close the Luke Mill at the end of this month is tied to an effort to bust the union. WCBC asked acting Maryland DLLR Secretary Jim Rzepkowski if he had heard those rumors and whether such a scenario would be a possibility.

If this is true, the benefits for Verso (busting the union) would outweigh any difficulties involved.
Never underestimate the lengths that any company will go to if they have an opportunity to get rid of any and all unions.
In a union working environment the company is actually obligated to follow worker health and safety rules. If they can bust the union those rules can be ignored or eliminated on a whim.
The list goes on and on.

It was time for the “blame the unions” card to be played. Count on CBC to traffic in “what if’s” and “some people say,” and other blame shifting right wing conspiracy theories that hide the greed factor which is all this is about.

Just another reason the drag out our mourning of the loss. Lets move on. We can’t afford to cry in our coffee for 20 years after the fact like we still do about the Kelly and others leaving. The plant closing was 10 years later than it should have been. We were lucky they stayed as long as they did. To over use the phrase some more…a dirty little secret around here….a whole lot a businesses will not locate in WMd because of our strong union support among our workforce, and those who are here are looking to get out.
