School Board Has Busy Meeting Tuesday

August 14th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

Two issues that have been subject to lengthy, often times heated debate between the Allegany County Board of Education and the county commissioners received approval Tuesday night in a board meeting that wrapped up in 30 minutes and featured little in the way of discussion. The board, by voting to have a second reading of a proposed policy on board meetings-  essentially acknowledged that the ex-officio member will be permitted to sit in during all parts of executive or closed sessions. The commissioners had pushed for that, while some board members balked. All indications are that it was found that there is nothing in the state code that would allow the board to prohibit the ex-officio member from attending a closed session.  Board Attorney Gary Hanna said by approving the 2nd reading, the policy will go into effect.

In other business, the board approved the hire of three school resource officers to provide school security. Hired were Steve Winiger and Brian Hughes, both with more than 20 years experience with the Maryland Sttae Police; and Timothy Stevens, 28 years experience with Frostburg State University Police. Sheriff Craig Robertson, who will also hire school security officers in the future, applauded the board’s choices…
