School Board signs contract with MABE to help with superintendent search

February 11th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Board of Education  Tuesday formally entered into an agreement with the Maryland Association of Boards of Education for assistance  in the search for a permanent superintendent. The board named Jeff Blank as the interim superintendent last summer- and in October voted to name him as the permanent choice. The state, however,  overruled that action saying it was done outside of the statutory appointment period. Now faced with a July 1 deadline to appoint a permanent superintendent, the board will utilize the services of MABE to  assist in the four step process which includes advertising; conducting the search; making a selection and appointing a person to fill the position. Cost to the board will be $20,000 plus expenses. The expenses part of the arrangement presented a concern for board member Robert Farrell who said he was hesitant to sign off on the deal without having a better handle on how much those expenses could cost the board. Board President Tammy Fraley noted that there will be a point person with MABE and the board in communication throughout the process that will keep tabs on any costs being incurred. Satisfied that the board will be kept up to date on MABE expenses, Farrell made it a unanimous vote by the board in approving the contract.

Why is the Board of Education wasting money on this when the state will tell them what they’re going to do?

Why can’t they handle this themselves?

Is Mr. Farrell afraid there won’t be enough money for his lawsuits?
