School Security Discussion Continues

After tragic school shootings in both Florida and Maryland, there have been calls to make sure all schools have a member of law enforcement who acts as a school resource officer.  However, the problem is funding the positions which become a challenge for school districts dealing with tight budgets. When the Allegany County Board of Education approached the county commissioners requesting assistance in securing state or federal dollars to allow for a resource officer in each of the county’s 21 schools- Commissioner Bill Valentine noted that previous efforts to fund school security measures in Maryland have been met with opposition at the state level- including from the state school superintendent organization. Superintendent David Cox said the previous concerns from education groups resulted from proposals that would fund school security at the expense of teachers and the classrooms. If security can be upgraded without negatively impacting the education budget- the superintendents would gladly endorse the plan…
