School Security Dominates BoE Public Work Session

On a day that saw Frostburg City Police officers questioning students and staff at Mountain Ridge High School about the possibility of a gun on campus- the subject of school security dominated the public work session of the Allegany County Board of Education. Superintendent David Cox, Supervisor of Student Service Dr Ben Brauer and law enforcement representatives from Cumberland, Frostburg, Allegany County and FSU provided an overview of how security is handled in the school system. It should be noted, this was the first public school board session since last month’s tragic school shooting in Florida. One woman, Lisa Nelson, addressed the board on the security question. Her biggest concern is with the current system that has people entering a school building to be buzzed in. She said all too often people are simply allowed in even if the staffer providing entry doesn’t know who they are….
