A  kayaker who was reported missing on the South Branch of the Potomac River since about 6 p.m. Wednesday was found around 4 p.m. Thursday, according to the Hardy County 911 Center.

The name and age of the man who had tried to retrieve a capsized canoe was not available but the dispatcher said he was with Division of Natural Resources personnel and was being taken to the Moorefield fire department for examination.

The kayaker was with two people in a canoe that had capsized. Both of them safely got out of the water, apparently without injury, according to Hardy County 911 Deputy Director Tammy Gilhuys.

“The gentleman in the kayak then went down river to retrieve the capsized canoe and other items and he was not seen again,” said Gilhuys.

An immediate search of the river in the area of the H.L. Wilson Campground and Old Fields bridge continued until dark and then resumed Thursday morning.

Maryland State Police medevac Trooper 5 helicopter, several West Virginia Division of Natural Resources units and the Moorefield Volunteer Fire Department were taking part in the search.

A missing person report was filed with police by the occupants of the canoe that had capsized between the Riverside Cabins and the Fisher bridge, Gilhuys said.
